From October 15/23 Vancouver’s Indian community celebrates the festival of Diwali

Diwali (also Deepavali) is one of the most important festivals celebrated by Hindus. While known as the “Festival of Lights”, it actually is the festival of the “Row of  Lamps”.

Traditionally, Diwali requires lighting small clay lamps filled with oil. This symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. According to the legend the lamps were lit to guide home king Rama after a 14 year absence – some 4,000 years before Odysseus got lost. Was this makes the first illuminated landing strip?

During the festival all celebrants share sweets and snacks with family members and friends. And it is a Diwali tradition to buy new clothes. There is even more good news: There is no rule that says you have to buy Indian garments.
